Son père, réfugié polonais, effectue son service militaire dans le but d’obtenir la nationalité française. La guerre éclate, il s’engage dans la légion étrangère. Il participe aux combats, est fait prisonnier et envoyé au stalag XI B à Hanovre. Sa mère Itta, de nationalité polonaise, retourne avec ses deux enfants Léon et Max dans la région parisienne durant l’année 1942.
